Even though Bradley Wiggins has initially insisted that Team Sky would be his first choice while considering his future in road cycling, it becomes more and more possible that the former Tour de France champion will leave the British team after his current contract expires by the end of 2014 season.
Originating from track cycling, Wiggins was an integral part of Team Sky project from its inception and on many occasions emphasized his dedication to this idea, but his current situation within the British squad reportedly forced him to reassess his options for the future in road cycling.
Even though the 34-year old Briton eventually rediscovered his form and motivation from most successful 2012 year, performing above expectations in the Paris-Roubaix and taking a highly convincing victory at the Tour of California, participation in the Tour de France, his main objective of 2014 season, remains very uncertain.
As Froome’s position at Team Sky seems to be unshakable, despite declarations about putting all the differences to bed the fruitful coexistence of the two Britons in the same squad seems effectively impossible.
In such situation, according to Gazzetta dello Sport it is almost decided that Wiggins will leave Team Sky by the end of the current season, but it remains unclear with squad he would choose for final years of his career in road cycling.
We have informed last week that Orica-GreenEDGE was ready to put serious money on the table in order to sign Wiggins as their grand tour contender, offering him a support of a young talented riders in the likes of Esteban Chaves, Michael Hepburn or Yates brothers.
According to Italian media, Wiggins’ return under the Garmin-Sharp wings is another option as it is not a big secret that the former Tour de France winner and Jonathan Vaughters are close friends.
