When Bradley Wiggins won the Tour de France in 2012, he followed the tradition in professional cycling of sharing the prize money with his teammates. According to David Walsh, Chris Froome who finished 2nd in that year's race after much internal rivalry with Wiggins, had to wait 14 month to receiver his share of the money.
One of the most debated internal rivalries in the past decade was the one between Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome on the Sky team during the 2012 Tour de France. Ever since Froome attacked his race-leading captain on the stage to La Toussuire, it has been no secret that the two British stars haven't been the best of friends.
Another aspect to the Wiggins-Froome debate has been revealed by Sunday Times journalist David Walsh who is the author of the new book Inside Team Sky. On Twitter, he claims that Froome had to wait 14 months to receive his share of the prize money that Wiggins earned by winning last year's edition of La Grande Boucle.
It is a common tradition in cycling that the prize money is shared among the riders on the team and the staff but apparently, Wiggins was reluctant to pay Froome his share.
The money was paid in week of 2013 World C'ships, 14 months after 2012 Tour ended and you're right, that's in the book," Walsh wrote on Twitter.
Sky sports director Sean Yates has later claimed that Wiggins was close to leaving the race after the stage to La Toussuire but Yates and Sky principal Dave Brailsford convinced him to stay. Froome was close to distancing his captain again on the stage of Peyragudes but once again waited for Wiggins.
Froome went on to finish 2nd in that year's Tour de France but took over captaincy duties for this year's race, taking a very convincing win. Wiggins has later hinted that his time as a grand tour contender is over and may leave the road to focus on the track after the 2014 season.
