Former world time trial champion Bert Grabsch's career may be about to come to an end. The German has not been offered a new contract by his Omega Pharma-Quick Step team and will stop racing if a decent offer does not land on his table.
Bert Grabsch has had a difficult time in the last couple of seasons and has been unable to reproduce the performances that marked him out as one of the best time triallists in the world and allowed to win the world championships in 2008. Having not won a race since the 2011 Tour of Austria time trial, the German has not been offered a new contract by his Omega Pharma-Quick Step team.
"A few days ago, my manager was told by the team management that I wouldn't get a new contract," Grabsch told Radsport News. "I wasn't selected for the Tour and after the Tour of Austria I was told that I would not get into the Vuelta line-up even though I would have liked to race in Spain. That was a clear sign for me. Hence, I had expected the announcement."
If a suitable doesn't turn up, Grabsch will end his career at the end of the season.
"I have had a few requests but in the end I have to wait and see," he said. "If I don't get a suitable offer, I will end my career."
However, Grabsch has no intentions of slowing down in the final part of the season.
"I won't give up, am motivated and want to recommend myself to potential employers," he said and explained that he will race the Vattenfall Cyclassics and the World Ports Classic in an attempt to get selected for the world championships. "I hope that I get selected. The course suits me," he said.
Grabsch finished 36th on the hilly course in Limburg last year.
