LottoNL-Jumbo is the only WorldTour team with no wins in 2015. The team has been hampered by injuries and setbacks and has had to settle for four second places and one third place.
Team manager Merijn Zeeman focuses knows that things could be better. But is he panicking? "No, I'm not in panic. We are in a difficult phase. And we are working hard to get out of this position. Panic is not a good companion," he told NOS.
With Sep Vanmarcke, LottoNL-Jumbo had a real chance of a victory in the Flemish classics. For the Ardennes classics, it will be more difficult according to Zeeman. "We want to be visible and show the fans that we are ready to fight. With Paul Martens, we will pursue a good result."
Zeeman admits that he is not satisfied. But how does he intend to turn the tide? "We must adhere to the philosophy and the plan. We have many qualities. In Roubaix I saw a team that was fighting. In the next three races (Amstel Gold Race, Fleche Wallonne, Liege, ed.) we need to be proud of our results after each race."
For the Amstel Gold Race, LottoNL-Jumbo has again had to deal with health issues. Wilco Kelderman has been suffering from a virus since last week. "The legs feel good, I only have problems with the snot. That is annoying."
Tomorrow Kelderman will ride his first Amstel Gold Race and he looks forward to the experience. "I will try to get as far as possible. Whether it is difficult that we do not belong to the favorites? Yes, it is definitely a different race. With a favorite in the team, it is easier. You can make the race. Now we have to invent something."
Furthermore, Bram Tankink suffers from the hypothenar hammer syndrome. A condition in which the arteries in the hand are too narrow. Hence, the Dutchman is in considerable pain. "In the spring I had the first symptoms. Just like that, all of a sudden. Then it slowly disappeared."
During the recon of Paris-Roubaix, Tankink suddenly had it again: excruciating pain in his left hand. "During the race I could hardly hold the handlebar and I had to abandon."
Tankink will now ride with a thick sponge in his protect his hand from the stress. "Here in the Amstel, the roads are good but in Wednesday's Fleche Wallonne it is another story. There the asphalt is not as good."
