Danilo Wyss is the BMC team's designated sprinter for this year's Volta a Catalunya. Inspired by the recent birth of his second child, he made the most of the rare opportunity to chase personal results by joining a select 13-man group and end up 5th in the sprint.
As a member of the powerful BMC team, the chances to search personal opportunities may be few. As the team's only sprinter in the race, Danilo Wyss has got his rare possibility to go for glory in this year's Volta a Catalunya, and he made sure to make the most of it from the beginning of the race.
With most people expecting a bunch sprint at the end of today's first stage in Calella, Wyss made sure to stay near the front as the peloton crested the summit of the day's final climb. Hence, he was well-positioned to join up with the leaders when Bradley Wiggins (Sky) forced a selection on the subsequent descent.
With the team's GC rider Ivan Santaromita having missed the split, Wyss was the only representative from his team in the front group, and he was left to fight for himself. With the birth of his second child fresh in mind, he fought hard to make the most of this opportunity, but in the end a hard stage caught up with the Swiss sprinter.
"The move went in the technical downhill," he said. "I was happy to be in this group with all the general classification riders, but I was tired for the sprint with the up-and-down technical finish."
Tomorrow's stage should be another opportunity for Wyss with 4 laps on a final circuit towards the end of the stage. Most sprinters fancy their chances on the mostly flat terrain, but with a small hill and coastal wind playing a role BMC sports director Max Sciandri said that we may be in for another surprise.
"We will again be on the coastline and it will be windy, so another tough and demanding race," he said. "But we'll see how the guys are. We're taking things one day at a time."
