In 2014, Marcel Wyss was unable to achieve similar succes after his 2013 win in the Tour de Berne and his many top 10 results in stage races. Nonetheless, the loyal domestqiue for IAM leader Mathias Frank is satisfied with his performance.
The 28-year-old was mainly a strong support for the IAM newcomer in the Tour de Suisse in which Frank finished second.
"In that race, I rode Tony Martin out of the leader's jersey as I led the lead group with Mathias and the overall winner Rui Costa for 40km in the final stage. Mathias thanked me very much," Wyss told radsport-news.com with great pride.
The Swiss scored his best results at the Bayern Rundfahrt where he finished ninth, and at the Swiss Championships where he was sixth in the road race. Despite working for Frank, he was still 18th in the Tour de Suisse.
On the other hand, he had bad luck twice in the Tour de Romandie which was one of his highlights.
"In the first stage, I crashed and in the time trial, I had to change my bike. An overall top 10 was definitely possible," said Wyss who had to settle for 16th.
The first participation in the Tour de France was one of the highlights and here Wyss got a free ride after Frank abandoned.
"Unfortunately, I was unable to exploit my freedoms. I was consistent in the mountains but I was never in the front," said the all-rounder who ended the race in 32nd.
After the Tour, Wyss stopped his season as he underwent surgery on the left flank in September which had been planned for a long time. Wyss is now training again and hopes to make his comeback in February 2015.
Wyss doesn't want to comment on his future despite the fact that his contract with IAM will expire at the end of the season. However, much suggests that he will continue with the Swiss team as Frank would be reluctant to lose his reliable domestique when he again attacks the top 10 in the Tour de France.
