Clasica San Sebastian winner Adam Yates has finished second from a late break at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montreal in Canada.
After an active day by the entire ORICA-GreenEDGE team, the 23-year-old initiated a move on the final climb in the last lap to breakaway with Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal).
In the final, Yates made his move from behind but the legs of Wellens provided just too strong to take the victory.
The result marks ORICA-GreenEDGE’s third second place in as many races in Canada, following Yates’ second overall at the Tour of Alberta and Michael Matthews second place at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec on Friday.
“It wasn’t just at the finish he was stronger but from the top of the climb all the way to the finish,” Yates told Cyclingweekly. “I can be pretty happy with second. I guess I’ll come back next year and try and go one better.
“Tim came across to me and gave me a big turn straight away so was super strong. All the run-in towards the finish he was doing the most work and doing the biggest turns.”
