The Herald Sun Tour was again a chance for the Australian talents to show themselves at the highest level and two of the most promising riders came away with special jerseys for the efforts.
After a strong performance in yesterday's break, Cameron Bayly (search2retain) went into the final stage with the chance to take the win in the mountains competition. As he again managed to join the right break, it was mission accomplished for the talented Australian.
“I saw a little move go up the road pretty early on and I thought, ‘I’ve got to get in this’,” Bayly explained. “It was a big group and there were some strong guys that really wanted to get a gap before the climb.”
“I’m glad that I could really step up for the boys and give them something in return,” Bayly explained with his team hit by bad luck throughout the tour with three withdrawals through injury and illness.
The rider he passed in the mountains classification was Robert Power who is widely regarded as the next big Australian climber. However, the 19-year-old still showed his class by finishing fifth in the queen stage to win the young rider's jersey.
“The guys did everything and I can’t thank them enough,” he said. “They literally just dug so hard today and it was amazing.”
Power has signed a contract with Orica-GreenEDGE and will turn professional in 2016.
