Riding for the French U23 team, Guillaume Martin confirmed his huge potential by riding with the best climbers in the queen stage of the Tour de l'Ain and finish 12th overall.
"I was dropped on the descent from Cote de Menthières with a rider from Bora Argon 18 and Pozzovivo (AG2R La Mondiale)," he told Directvelo. "We were caught by the group behind us. Then Bretagne chased. I was still good. Vachon made the jump to return to the Geniez group. I was with Pozzovivo and two from Cofidis who were just following wheels. I was still a little behind. A Bora rider returned to me.
"Up the road, they rode for GC. I never returned to the yellow jersey group. It's frustrating because I have shown on the Menthières that I belonged with the best. That's still good for the morale for the Tour de l'Avenir.
"I usually tend to do well in late July at the Tour de Alsace and then fade. With my coach, Samuel Bellenoue, we have changed my preparation. I did a quieter month of July, and I hope to build up for the Tour de l'Avenir. It will be the real high-mountain race. There will be a good chance."
