Simone Andreetta (Bardiani) delivered a solid performance in Tour of Oman Stage 1 from Bayt Al Naman to Al Wutayyah. The youngest rider of the race (21 years and 171 days) pulled away in the day's break, remaning in front for nearly 100km.
After the official start four riders attacked: Simone Andreetta, Van Zyl (MTN Qubeka), Van Merhaeghe (Topsport) and Konrad (Bora – Argon 18). The breakaway got an advantage of five minutes, but in the feeding zone Van Zyl (MTN) went solo and with 70 km to go Andreetta and the other escapees were back in the peloton.
Close to the finish line Van Zyl was also caught and all riders were ready for an expected bunch sprint. The stage victory was taken by Italian Andrea Guardini (Astana) who beat Boonen (Etixx – Quick Step) and Pelucchi (IAM Cycling). All riders from Bardiani crossed the line in the middle of the main group.
”The stage developed as expected, it was a good way to start this new race," sports director Bruno Reverberi said. "Andreetta was very good to go in the right breakaway, giving a solid contribution in front. He’s a young talent rider in whom we believe a lot for the coming years. Now our thoughts are on tomorrow's stage that presents a good finish for Colbrelli and Battaglin."
