"Edoardo was strong today but perhaps he paid a bit for his inexperience because he should have controlled Kwiatkowski and not Roche. Anyway, he has to be satisfied."

Edoardo Zardini only managed to hold onto the leader's jersey in the Tour of Britain for one stage. Lacking experience in the hilly stage 4, he spent too much energy by trying to follow Nicolas Roche and then was unable to match the attack from key rival Michal Kwiatkowski.

Yesterday Edoardo Zardini took a fantastic stage win in the queen stage of the Tour of Britain and got the chance to wear the leader's jersey too. However, he lost the coveted tunic after a single day as key rival Michal Kwiatkowski won today's stage.

Zardini tried to follow an attack by Nicolas Roche on the final climb but had to let the Irishman go. When Kwiatkowski made his move a little later, the Italian no longer had the power to stay with the Pole.

”I’m little disappointed to have lost the yellow jersey after just one day," he said. With the team we tried to do best but unfortunately Kwiatkowski's late attack surprised me because I had followed a previous move by Roche. Now 3 seconds behind, it’s hard to come back on top because the Omega Pharma leader is really strong. Anyway, tomorrow all could change again and I have to be ready for that."

”We are not disappointed to have lost the leader's jersey because already this morning we knew that it could be hard to keep it," sports director Roberto Reverberi said. "A lot of rivals were really close in the GC and the finales are not easy to handle in a safe way. Edoardo was strong today but perhaps he paid a bit for his inexperience because he should have controlled Kwiatkowski and not Roche. Anyway, he has to be satisfied, he achieved a great result yesterday and we’re really happy for what he already did. From tomorrow we go back to target stages, Colbrelli and Battaglin are in good shape and have the chance to do really well."
