For a long time, Oliver Zaugg was in podium contention in the Tour of Austria but the time trial caused him to drop to 7th. Nonetheless, Tinkoff-Saxo are satisfied with their performance.
There were no obstacles on the run-in to Vienna on today’s only 122 kilometer long 8th and final stage of Tour of Austria where Team Sky’s Peter Kennaugh has been leading the GC from the first stage. Tinkoff-Saxo’s Oliver Zaugg has been doing a consistent race and was 3rd overall before yeaterday’s flat time trial where he dropped to 7th overall. The terrain today didn’t exactly invite the climbers to attack.
Even though a breakaway did their best to deny the sprinters of their feast in Vienna, it was doomed to fail. Too many interests in the field caused the escapees to be swept up and the race was concluded with a hectic mass sprint where Marco Haller was the fastest of all. Tinkoff-Saxo’s Oliver Zaugg finished between the 20 fastest riders on today’s stage and retained his overall 7th position.
“Our goal in this race was to win a stage and Evgeny won the most beautiful in the race after a solo adventure in the mountains. We also targeted a solid position in the GC and Oliver has been showing consistency and terrific form all week but the long and flat time trial ruined his chances of a spot on the final podium but in all all I’m happy with the effort and the result,” said DS Tristan Hoffman after the final stage.
